Alto Adige is the region in the extreme north of Italy

 


Albite (pericline)
Well shaped white XX, up to 2.4cm tall. Pericline seems to be the name for white opaque albite from the Alps, with elongated XX (instead of the tabular ones of proper albite). Valle del Vento is located at the top of Valle Aurina and it is famous for titanite and pericline

Almandine
3 XX, in the classic dodecahedron on the gray-green schist. Edge max is 1.4cm

Aragonite
XX of aragonite, up to 2cm long, in the vug of the rock

Calcite
Large XX (rhombs not well formed) with rounded edges, up to 4.5cm wide. Calcite is partially covered by a coating of white powder. The XX stands on the metamorphic rock; this shape is not unusual from that Alpine place

Dawsonite
Thin needles up to 2cm in a cavity. Dawsonite was found in a porfiritic quartz-rich occurrence, north of Terlano

Gypsum
Yellow acicular XX, very brilliant, in rosette formations, up to 0.6 cm long. On the specimen some small botryoidal black masses of goethite

Titanite
Green transparent XX, in a complex formation (with a twinned X) with adularia. It is 1.5cm long

Zoisite
6 cm long dark green X, fractured and  clearly striated, in a quartzitic matrix. It is a not frequent but typical occurrence in this region (Alpe del Lago in Val Passiria, Passo di Vizze): the XX are never  terminated and always broken
